Callouses are hard areas of the skin that are under constant pressure from shoes. If the pressure on the foot is concentrated to a specific spot, a deep corn can result. Callouses are often painful and can be difficult to walk with.

Callouses can be treated with proper paring and debridement at the West Mountain Footcare Clinic. The prevention of painful callouses often depends on proper fitting shoes and regular maintenance of the feet, such as applying cream on a regular basis.

Warts can present as callouses and they are often mistaken as them, however warts are caused by a skin infection from a virus. The virus attacks the skin of the foot after exposure to it in such areas as a pool or gym change room where someone previously affected has walked. Warts can be treated with certain medicaments that are designed to destroy the virus and eliminate the wart.
