Wearing Orthotic Insoles, Shoes & Sandals

wearing custom orthotics, insoles, shoes & sandals hamilton ontarioCustom orthotic insoles or orthotic shoes or sandals will often provide immediate relief from foot pain. However, your feet and legs may have functioned improperly for a long period of time, and since the custom orthotic insoles or orthotic shoes are now directing them to work differently, it may feel strange and require some adjustment at first.

Do not wear your custom orthotic insoles or orthotic shoes or sandals all day at first; gradually increase the amount of time you wear them. When you can wear your custom orthotic sandal, custom orthotic shoe or custom orthotic insole comfortably for four hours, then it is likely that you will be able to wear them comfortably all day.

The most important time to wear your custom orthotic insole, shoe or sandal, is when you are weight bearing for long periods, or exercising.

Discomfort When Wearing Orthotic Insoles

Some people develop discomfort in the foot, leg, or lower back when they first start to wear custom orthotic insoles, orthotic shoes or sandals. This is normal and is due to realignment of the whole lower extremity and pelvis. Once muscles and ligaments have readjusted to this new alignment, the discomfort disappears (usually within two or three weeks).

If you suffer some initial discomfort, for example mild aches along the outside and backs of your legs, then we recommend that you wear the custom orthotic insoles, orthotic shoes or orthotic sandals, for less than an hour per day for the first week and gradually increase the duration. Do not increase the duration of wearing a custom orthotic insole, shoe or sandal until aches have subsided.

Persistent discomfort may necessitate adjustment to your custom orthotic insoles, so contact your Podiatrist or Chiropodist in Hamilton if this occurs.
